Types of Business and Investor Visas

  • 188 Innovation and Investment (Provisional) Visa –  Innovation Stream

    Key Features

    • Suitable for small to medium sized entrepreneur
    • Focus on business innovative skills such as patents, trademarks, export
    • Assessment of an overall successful business background including turnover and profit
    • 4‐year temporary visa with PR pathway after 2 years 
    • Entitlement to Medicare and free education up to year 12

    Visa Eligibility

    • Under 55 years of age, up to 60 years of age (subject to special consideration from the state government)
    • Daily manage a business with at least 30% ownership with turnover of at least A$500,000 for at least 2 of the last 4 fiscal years 
    • Net personal and business assets of at least A$800,000 with a lawful source of funds 
    • Have an overall successful career in the main business
    • Meet the pass mark in the Business innovation and investment Points test (currently 65 points) 
    • Meet health and character requirements
  • 188 Innovation and Investment (Provisional) Visa – Investor Stream

    Key Features

    • Suitable for active international investors in areas such as stock, features, fund, foreign exchange, real estate or business
    • Assessment of investment background such as investment amount, frequency of trading and investment profit ratio
    • A$1.5 million investment in government bond is required 
    • 4 years temporary visas with PR pathway after 4 years 
    • Entitlement to Medicare and free education up to year 12 

    Visa Eligibility

    • Under 55 years of age, up to 60 years of age (subject to special consideration from the state government)
    • The applicant has had business and personal net assets of at least A$2.25 million for the last 2 fiscal years
    • The applicant must make an investment of A$1.5 million in Australian State or Territory bonds prior to grant of the visa
    • Have 3 years of experience either managing a qualifying business or “eligible investments”, and have showed a high level of management skill
    • For at least 1 of the 5 fiscal years, the applicant has either managed a business in which the applicant holds a 10% shareholding; or manage “eligible investments” of at least A$1.5 million. Eligible investments include: (1) Ownership interests in a business; (2) Cash on deposit; (3) Stocks or bonds; (4) Real estate; (5) Gold or bullion; (6) Loan to a business.

  • 188 Innovation and Investment (Provisional) Visa – Significant Investor Stream

    Key Features

    • Suitable for applicant who has disposable asset or deposit of at least A$5 million
    • No age, skills, English, business or investment background required
    • Assessment of lawful source of funds for claimed A$5 million asset
    • 4 years temporary visas with PR pathway after 4 years
    • Entitlement to Medicare and free education up to year 12

    Visa Eligibility

    • For grant of the visa, the applicant must make an investment of at least AUD 5 million in a “complying investment”
    • A “complying investment” for the purposes of the Significant Investor Visa must be made up of: (1) At least $500,000 in venture capital and growth private equity funds which invest in start‐ups and small private companies; (2) At least $1.5 million in approved managed funds investing in emerging companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange; (3) A ‘balancing investment’ of up to $3 million in managed funds that may invest in a range of assets, including ASX‐listed companies, Australian corporate bonds or notes, annuities and commercial real estate.

    Key Features

    • Suitable for large‐sized entrepreneur
    • Direct PR
    • Assessment of an overall successful business background such as turnover, business net assets and profit
    • Assessment of economic benefit derived from the proposed investment plan in Australia
    • No business innovation and investment points test required

    Visa Eligibility

    • Under 55 years of age, up to 60 years of age (subject to special consideration from the state government)
    • Daily manage a business with at least 30% ownership with turnover of at least A$3 million and net assets in business of at least A$400,000 for at least 2 of the last 4 fiscal years
    • Net personal and business assets of at least A$1.5 million with lawful source of funds
    • Have an overall successful career in business
    • Meet health and character requirements
  • 888 Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) Visa

    Key Features

    • Only available for 188 visa holders
    • Assessment of an Australian business performance such as turnover, business net assets and number of Australian employees hired
    • No business innovation and investment points test required
    • No second health assessment

    Visa Eligibility

    • At least 2 years continuous operation of a qualifying main business with at least 30% ownership in the nominating state
    • Daily manage a business with turnover of at least A$200,000 for the last 12 months prior to the visa application
    • At least A$600,000 throughout the last 12 months prior to the visa application and were lawfully acquired
    • Meet health and character requirements
